Learning at AWCL

MATH

At AWCL we use the Eureka Math curriculum from Great Minds. Eureka math provides lessons that follow the MN state math standards, give students time to practice fluency, allow for whole group and small group application problems, and an Exit Ticket for students to show understanding.

LITERACY

Our Literacy program includes the Daily 5 framework, which provides students with daily practice in reading, writing, word work (sight words, patterns, and vocabulary), and speaking and listening. Our literacy content comes from the CAFE program which teaches students Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary strategies across all grade levels.

Our youngest students learn phonics, sight words, and word patterns through a program called FUNdations, and our older students learn sight words, word, patterns, and vocabulary through a program called Words Their Way.

INVESTIGATION ©

A Learning Investigation © is a year-long study of science and social studies standards, inspired by EL Education expeditions and fine tuned by the AWCL Co-Founders to incorporate place-based learning, environmental education, and final products and/or presentations that bring learning to a public platform.

A Learning Investigation © has a common thread that pulls the standards together. It is interdisciplinary, which brings the content to math class, literacy class, and even specialist classes.
